An Italian Air Force ATR P-72A (reg. MM62280 – c/s EUFOR88) flew today from Sigonella to Bosnia and Herzegovina, supporting Operation Althea. While these ISR missions are routine, the aircraft remained fully trackable throughout the entire route, including over the operational area—an uncommon occurrence that offers rare visibility into an otherwise discreet surveillance pattern.

The aircraft, departed from Sigonella and crossed the Adriatic before continuing inland toward Bosnia. Unlike previous missions, where tracking typically drops as the aircraft approaches the area of operations, this flight remained visible for its entire duration, including while operating over Bosnia.

This detail alone makes the sortie noteworthy.

Routine mission, unusual visibility

Italian P-72A deployments in support of EUFOR Althea have been ongoing for years. These missions provide ISR coverage, contributing to situational awareness in a region that remains strategically sensitive despite the relative stability of recent years.

Operation Althea, officially known as the European Union Force (EUFOR) Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a military deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) overseen by the European Union. Launched on December 2, 2004, it took over the peacekeeping responsibilities previously held by NATO’s Stabilization Force (SFOR).

The mission operates under the Berlin Plus agreement, which allows the EU to utilize NATO’s command structures and assets for its operations.

Normally, however, these flights become partially or entirely untrackable once on station. This is often attributed to operational procedures such as transponder deactivation or other measures aimed at limiting visibility.

Today’s mission broke that pattern.

The aircraft maintained a continuous signal, allowing observers to follow not only the transit phase but also its activity within Bosnia. Several orbits were visible over key areas, including around Banja Luka and further east, suggesting a structured surveillance tasking.

Since the launch of the US-Israel operation against Iran, the Italian Air Force G-550 CAEW has been operating daily over the Ionian Sea with sorties exceeding seven hours. A temporal coincidence that, read alongside Defence Minister Crosetto's statements, points to a non-routine activation — though, as always in these matters, no official confirmation is forthcoming.
