The Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) activity of NATO and its allies continues unabated along the Alliance’s eastern flank. Today’s flight tracking data provides an interesting snapshot of aerial monitoring focused on two of the hottest theaters right now: the Polish-Ukrainian border and the Black Sea basin.
From the radar track captured today, two main protagonists emerge, operating synergistically to gather electronic and signals intelligence (SIGINT/ELINT).
The Swedish “Korpen”: Eyes on the North-Eastern Sector
In the central-northern sector, the track of the Swedish Air Force (Svenska Flygvapnet) stands out.
- Callsign: SVF680
- Aircraft: Gulfstream IV S102B Korpen
- Registration: 102002
The asset took off from Sweden and crossed the Baltic Sea heading south. As can be seen from the flight path, the Korpen established a surveillance orbit (a characteristic “racetrack” pattern) in the skies over eastern Poland, not far from the borders with Slovakia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The Korpen is a highly specialized platform for electronic warfare and signals intelligence (SIGINT). Sweden’s recent integration into NATO makes these sorties increasingly connected to the Alliance’s overall early warning framework, allowing for the continuous monitoring of movements and communications of Russian forces in the Kaliningrad exclave and along the Belarusian border.
The US Army Deploys the ARTEMIS II Over the Black Sea
Moving toward the south-eastern flank, the scenario shifts to the international waters of the Black Sea, an area constantly patrolled by US and NATO assets.
- Callsign: BRIO66
- Aircraft: Bombardier Challenger 650 ARTEMIS II
- Operator: United States – Army
- Registration: N159L (Contractor-owned aircraft)
The aircraft is performing long orbits off the coast of Romania, pushing towards the center of the Black Sea basin. The ARTEMIS (Airborne Reconnaissance and Target Exploitation Multi-Mission Intelligence System) program represents the new generation of US Army ISR platforms. Equipped with highly advanced sensors, it is capable of detecting and tracking targets on land and at sea from great distances, providing crucial data in real-time. Its presence is vital for monitoring the activities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the air defenses deployed in the Crimean peninsula.
The Strategic Context
The image perfectly captures the new “normal” in the skies of Eastern Europe. The simultaneous presence of tactical and strategic platforms, from the far north down to the Black Sea, creates a robust information shield. The combination of the signal-gathering capabilities of the Swedish Korpen and the deep-penetration radars of the American ARTEMIS guarantees NATO complete and constant Situational Awareness over the Russian rear echelons and the Ukrainian theater of war.

That’s a really interesting observation about the concentration of ISR in those areas – it makes sense given the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
