The track recorded this morning shows a decidedly interesting movement that falls outside the usual patterns. Initially, the US Navy drone (a Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton, registration 169661 and callsign VVPE661) that took off from NAS Sigonella appeared to be flying towards the Gulf region, as is customary for this type of mission.
However, upon reaching Jordanian airspace, the asset changed its flight profile: it began to descend to an altitude of approximately 11,000 feet, after which the tracking signal was lost. This event occurred in the vicinity of a Jordanian air base.
It is entirely possible that the drone actually landed there, although we currently have no official confirmation.
In any case, this is a noteworthy anomaly. In the Middle Eastern theater, US Tritons are usually deployed either at Sigonella or, on the opposite end, at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
This unusual track raises an interesting strategic question: has a new forward operating base been established in Jordan, further away from the Gulf but considered more suitable for security reasons in light of current regional tensions? We will continue to monitor the situation to determine whether this was an isolated flight or the beginning of a new operational pattern.
