Late tonight, two US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drones landed at Lajes Air Base after crossing the Atlantic from the United States, once again highlighting the growing operational importance of the Portuguese base for American missions linked to Eruope and the Middle East.

According to local observers, the two drones used the callsigns CROW72 and CROW81 and were identified as aircraft operating out of Syracuse (SYR), New York. Their arrival follows weeks of intense US military activity connected to operations against Iran and the wider reinforcement of CENTCOM-related assets.

At this stage, it is not possible to determine the final destination of the two MQ-9s. However, considering the current operational context and the recent concentration of US assets in the region, a deployment toward the Gulf area cannot be excluded.

The movement is particularly significant because Lajes continues to emerge as a critical transatlantic logistics and staging hub for the deployment of American unmanned systems toward Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The Azores as a Strategic Gateway

In recent months, Lajes Air Base has repeatedly supported tanker aircraft, transport planes and ISR assets moving between North America and operational theaters further east.

For MQ-9 Reapers, the Azores provide an ideal intermediate stop before continuing toward Europe or the Mediterranean basin. The location allows the United States to reduce transit complexity while maintaining a steady flow of remotely piloted aircraft into forward operating areas.

This latest deployment also comes as American ISR activity remains elevated across the Mediterranean and Middle East following the recent air campaign against Iran. MQ-9 aircraft are capable of both surveillance and strike missions, making them highly flexible assets during periods of regional tension.
