A USAF RQ-4A Global Hawk (reg. 10-2044) sortie out of NAS Sigonella drew attention overnight after the drone appeared over the Central Mediterranean using the unusual callsign “GINGER20.” The drone conducted a long mission south of Sicily with multiple holding patterns and atypical track behavior, something that may point toward a test or evaluation flight rather than a standard ISR mission.

The aircraft involved is occasionally seen from Sigonella, but only sporadically. In recent months the platform had flown just twice in March, once in October, and a handful of missions in September, making this latest activity particularly notable.

Unusual profile south of Sicily

The mission began yesterday evening and continued overnight with the drone operating largely south of Sicily and east of Malta. The track showed repeated loops, holding patterns, and elongated race-track segments rather than the more linear surveillance orbits commonly associated with operational ISR sorties.

Particularly interesting is the use of the callsign “GINGER20,” which does not appear frequently associated with Sigonella-based Global Hawk operations. Callsign changes or uncommon identifiers can sometimes be linked to test flights, maintenance validation sorties, sensor calibration missions, or specific operational taskings designed to reduce predictability.

High-altitude ISR platforms like the RQ-4 remain critical for persistent surveillance across North Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, and maritime approaches connecting Europe to the Middle East. Even occasional flights can provide strategic indications about force readiness, sensor validation, or renewed operational requirements.

If additional sorties follow in the coming days, this could suggest the reactivation of a more regular USAF Global Hawk presence from Sigonella after months of limited activity.
