On May 4, the Italian Navy’s multi-mission combat ship ITS Giovanni Delle Bande Nere (P 434) departed from Taranto for the 2026 Operational Projection Campaign in the Indo-Pacific, marking another step in Italy’s growing naval presence in the region. The deployment comes as Rome continues strengthening its strategic partnerships with allied navies and increasing its operational footprint far beyond the Mediterranean.

The ship, one of the newest and most advanced units in the Italian fleet, belongs to the Thaon di Revel-class Multipurpose Combat Ships (PPA) in Full configuration. Entering service only recently, the vessel combines air defense, anti-surface warfare, command-and-control and expeditionary capabilities in a single platform.

A broader Indo-Pacific strategy

Italian naval deployments to the Indo-Pacific have become increasingly frequent in recent years, reflecting NATO countries’ growing attention toward the region amid rising geopolitical competition and maritime security concerns.

According to information released in recent days, the campaign aims to strengthen operational capabilities, deepen cooperation with partner navies and ensure a qualified Italian maritime presence in an area considered strategically crucial for global trade and security.

The deployment also highlights Taranto’s evolving role as one of the main operational hubs of the Italian Navy, supporting both Mediterranean operations and long-range strategic missions.

Earlier this year, Giovanni Delle Bande Nere participated in NATO’s Formidable Shield exercise in northern European waters, demonstrating advanced air-defense and missile-interception capabilities before transitioning toward the Indo-Pacific theater.

Whether this marks the beginning of a more persistent Italian naval presence in the Indo-Pacific remains unclear. However, the timing of the deployment suggests Rome intends to maintain a visible and increasingly credible role alongside allied maritime powers throughout 2026.
