Today, two NATO E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft were tracked departing from Geilenkirchen and heading toward Preveza Air Base in western Greece, underlining once again the importance of the site as one of NATO’s regular forward operating locations for airborne surveillance missions.

The aircraft, operating as NATO40 and NATO41, flew south across Italy before reaching Greece, where NATO E-3 deployments are routinely supported. While Trapani remains one of the Alliance’s best-known forward operating bases for AWACS activity in the central Mediterranean, Preveza has also long played a similar role.

What makes Preveza strategically relevant is its geographic position. Located on the Ionian coast of Greece, the base allows NATO airborne early warning assets to rapidly cover multiple sensitive areas simultaneously: the Adriatic, the Balkans, the Aegean Sea and portions of the Eastern Mediterranean. This flexibility has become increasingly valuable today as NATO continues to monitor instability stretching from the Black Sea region to the Levant.

A key hub for NATO airborne surveillance

The Boeing E-3A Sentry remains one of NATO’s most important command-and-control platforms, capable of coordinating air operations while providing long-range radar surveillance over vast areas. Forward deployments to bases such as Preveza reduce transit times and increase on-station endurance, allowing crews to sustain longer surveillance missions closer to operational areas.

Preveza itself has quietly become a recurring hub for NATO aircraft detachments over the years, even if it receives far less public attention than larger bases such as Sigonella or Trapani. Its infrastructure and proximity to multiple theaters make it particularly useful for rapid-response surveillance missions and regional air policing support.
