Italy has officially awarded Airbus Defence and Space a contract for six new tanker aircraft, confirming a major modernization effort for the Italian Air Force’s strategic refueling fleet. According to a contract award notice published in recent days in the Official Journal of the European Union, the program covers the acquisition of six multirole tanker aircraft alongside long-term integrated logistic support, for a total value exceeding €1.39 billion.
The contract, signed on April 16, 2026, confirms Airbus Defence and Space SAU as the winner of the restricted European tender launched by the Italian Ministry of Defence. The program appears set to introduce a new generation of tanker capability for the Aeronautica Militare while further consolidating the Airbus A330 MRTT as Europe’s dominant aerial refueling platform.
The procurement notice refers to the “renewal, enhancement and integrated logistic support” of the Italian Air Force’s heavy multirole tanker line, with the program extending over a duration of 122 months.
A New Phase for Italian Strategic Aviation
While the official documentation does not explicitly mention the aircraft model, the selection of Airbus Defence and Space strongly indicates the acquisition of the A330 MRTT platform already operated by several NATO air forces including France, the United Kingdom, Spain and the multinational MRTT unit based in Eindhoven.
The decision marks a significant evolution for Italy’s tanker fleet.
The Aeronautica Militare currently operates four KC-767A tankers, which entered service more than a decade ago. The new acquisition will substantially expand both fleet size and operational flexibility at a time when Italian air assets are increasingly active across the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, the Red Sea and wider NATO operational theaters.
Beyond simple fleet replacement, the program suggests Italy is aiming to strengthen its long-range force projection and interoperability with allied European tanker operators.
That aspect may prove strategically important in coming years as NATO increasingly relies on distributed deployments and sustained air operations across multiple fronts simultaneously.
Whether the six-aircraft acquisition represents the final planned fleet size or the beginning of a broader tanker expansion effort remains unclear.
Logistics and Long-Term Support Included
One of the most notable aspects of the contract is the inclusion of integrated logistic support over more than ten years.
This indicates the Italian Ministry of Defence is not only investing in new aircraft, but also in long-term operational availability, sustainment infrastructure and fleet readiness — areas that have become increasingly central in modern military procurement strategies.
The awarded contract has a total value of €1.393 billion excluding VAT, slightly below the initial estimated value of €1.408 billion published during the tender phase.
The deal also reinforces Airbus’ position within European military aviation procurement at a time when several European governments are emphasizing continental industrial cooperation and strategic autonomy in critical defense sectors.
Interestingly, the result also appears to close the door on the Boeing KC-46A Pegasus, which had long been considered a possible successor to Italy’s KC-767 fleet due to existing operational commonality with Boeing tanker platforms.
For Italy, the choice potentially signals not only a fleet modernization effort, but also a broader alignment with the emerging European standard for strategic air refueling operations ahead of the next decade.
