Over the last few days, Guardia di Finanza ATR P-72B maritime patrol aircraft have repeatedly operated in the waters west of Sardinia, an area that is not typically associated with routine Italian customs and financial police surveillance activity. The flights appear to focus on a sector between Sardinia and the western Mediterranean approaches, suggesting increased attention to maritime traffic transiting toward the central Mediterranean.

Today’s mission again saw one of the Guardia di Finanza’s P-72Bs conducting extended racetrack patterns and surveillance orbits in the area west of Alghero, after departing from mainland Italy. The repeated presence in the same sector over multiple days indicates a sustained operational interest rather than a one-off patrol.

Increased Focus on Western Mediterranean Traffic

The ATR P-72B is primarily used for maritime patrol, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and anti-smuggling operations. While Guardia di Finanza aircraft routinely monitor the Tyrrhenian Sea and migration routes closer to Sicily or southern Italy, the concentration of activity further west is more unusual.

This sector sits along several important maritime corridors linking the western Mediterranean with Italy and the central basin. Commercial shipping, energy-related traffic, and vessels moving between North Africa, Spain, southern France and Italy all transit through this area.

In recent days, Mediterranean maritime monitoring activity has generally increased amid broader regional tensions and intensified naval deployments across the basin. In this context, the Guardia di Finanza flights may support wider maritime domain awareness efforts alongside military and civilian agencies.

The patrol geometry visible today also suggests a deliberate surveillance pattern rather than simple transit activity. The aircraft repeatedly covered the same maritime blocks before returning eastbound toward mainland Italy.

A Broader Surveillance Posture

Italy has steadily expanded the operational use of the P-72 fleet over the last years, employing the aircraft not only for law enforcement missions but also for strategic maritime monitoring tasks. The western Mediterranean has become increasingly important due to evolving trafficking routes, energy security concerns, and growing naval activity involving both NATO and non-NATO actors.

The recurring patrols west of Sardinia may therefore reflect a temporary surge in monitoring requirements tied to current Mediterranean dynamics. Additional flights in the coming days could help clarify whether this becomes a more stable surveillance posture in the area during the early summer period.

Monitoring military aircraft and ships movements over Italy and Mediterranean Sea

  • That’s interesting, it seems like a smart move to bolster surveillance in that area given the potential for illicit activity around Sardinia.
