The Italian Navy submarine ITS Romeo Romei (S529) departed Brest on 29 May, potentially in connection with GRAMPUS 2026, a French-led anti-submarine warfare exercise believed to be taking place in the Eastern Atlantic.

While no official information regarding the submarine’s involvement has been released, the timing of its departure from the French naval base coincides with the exercise period. Brest serves as one of France’s principal naval hubs and frequently hosts multinational anti-submarine warfare activities.

GRAMPUS is the French-led iteration of the STRIKER Theater Anti-Submarine Warfare (TASW) exercise series, conducted under the command of Combined Task Force 451 (CTF-451). The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability among allied forces and improve anti-submarine warfare capabilities through complex training scenarios involving submarines, surface combatants and maritime patrol aircraft.

As one of the Italian Navy’s Type 212A submarines, Romeo Romei represents one of the service’s most capable underwater assets. Its presence in Brest and subsequent departure suggest a possible contribution to the exercise’s submarine warfare component.

At the time of writing, neither the Italian Navy nor the French Navy has publicly disclosed details regarding the units participating in GRAMPUS 20
