Italian Eurofighters Deploy To Romania, Reinforcing NATO’s Black Sea Air Shield

Four Italian Air Force Eurofighter F-2000A fighters have arrived at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania, where they will support NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission over the Alliance’s south-eastern flank for the next two months.

The deployment, announced by Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, brings around 180 Italian personnel, including pilots, maintainers and support staff, to one of NATO’s most strategically important regions. Operating alongside Romanian Air Force F-16s, the Italian fighters will contribute to the surveillance and protection of Allied airspace near the Black Sea at a time when tensions with Russia remain high.

For the Aeronautica Militare, this marks the seventh rotation of Italian Eurofighters to Romania, underlining Rome’s continued commitment to NATO’s collective defence posture.

Strengthening NATO’s Presence Near The Black Sea

The enhanced Air Policing mission was established in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and has become an increasingly important element of NATO’s deterrence strategy in Eastern Europe.

From bases at Mihail Kogălniceanu and Borcea, Allied fighters maintain a rapid reaction capability designed to respond to any potential violation of NATO airspace. Beyond the operational mission itself, these deployments also strengthen interoperability between Allied air forces and demonstrate NATO’s ability to rapidly reinforce vulnerable sectors of its eastern flank.

The arrival of the Italian Eurofighters comes as military activity around the Black Sea continues to attract close attention from NATO planners. While much of the focus remains on the war in Ukraine, the region has also become a key area for surveillance, air defence and deterrence operations.

Currently, the NATO enhanced Air Policing mission in Romania is led by the United Kingdom, with Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons deployed at Borcea Air Base until July. The addition of the Italian detachment further increases the Alliance’s air power presence in a region that remains at the centre of NATO’s security concerns.
