Two U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft departed NAS Sigonella today heading east, likely toward the Middle East or the Horn of Africa. While the movement itself was notable, what attracted attention among flight-tracking enthusiasts was that one of the aircraft appeared to be transmitting an ICAO hex code associated with a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber.
That anomaly quickly fueled speculation online that a B-52 Stratofortress had departed Sicily. However, available evidence indicates that no B-52 was operating from Sigonella and that the aircraft involved was in fact a P-8A.
What Is an ICAO Hex Code?
Every aircraft equipped with a Mode S transponder is assigned a unique 24-bit identification number, commonly known as an ICAO hex code.
This code is transmitted through ADS-B and Mode S systems and is used by tracking platforms to identify aircraft. In normal circumstances, the hex code remains uniquely associated with a specific airframe throughout its service life.
When a military aircraft transmits an incorrect, temporary, or reassigned hex code, tracking websites can mistakenly identify it as another aircraft entirely.
That appears to be what happened today.

The recurrence of these events suggests that this is not a temporary error linked to a single flight, but rather a persistent issue affecting this particular aircraft’s transmitted identification data.
For analysts and aviation enthusiasts, the episode underscores the importance of looking beyond the aircraft label displayed by tracking websites. While the hex code pointed to a strategic bomber, the aircraft’s actual behavior consistently revealed a maritime patrol aircraft operating from NAS Sigonella and other locations routinely used by the U.S. Navy.
Today’s rumors of a B-52 departure from Sicily therefore appear to be the latest example of a recurring tracking anomaly that has repeatedly generated confusion throughout 2026.
