Italian Air Force E-550A CAEW Heads to Arizona for Maintenance, Highlighting the Global Support Network Behind Italy’s AEW Fleet

One of the Italian Air Force’s most valuable airborne surveillance assets crossed the Atlantic yesterday, with E-550A CAEW (reg. MM62293 – c/s IAM1490) flying from Pratica di Mare AB to Phoenix, Arizona, after a technical stop in Nuuk, Greenland.

While the flight itself was not operational in nature, it offers a glimpse into the extensive support infrastructure required to sustain modern airborne early warning capabilities. Phoenix is home to major Gulfstream maintenance facilities, making it a logical destination for scheduled maintenance or technical work on the aircraft.

A strategic asset requiring specialized support

The E-550A CAEW fleet represents a key component of Italy’s airborne surveillance and command-and-control capabilities. Based on the Gulfstream G550 business jet platform and equipped with advanced Israeli-developed sensors, these aircraft provide long-range detection and battle management functions that have become increasingly important in recent years.

Maintaining such a sophisticated system requires periodic access to highly specialized industrial facilities, some of which are located in the United States. The transatlantic deployment seen yesterday is therefore a reminder that the operational availability of strategic assets depends not only on aircrews and military infrastructure but also on a global network of industrial partners.

The route chosen by MM62293 followed the well-established North Atlantic corridor, with a stop in Greenland before continuing to the southwestern United States.
