On the evening of 12 May 2025, the Russian Navy corvette Boikiy (SKR-532) exited the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar after completing a refueling operation with the fleet oiler Kola off the coast of Al Hoceima, Morocco.
The Boikiy, a Steregushchiy-class corvette, is currently continuing its escort mission, accompanying the Russian-flagged cargo vessels MV Siyanie Severa and MV Patria as they head south into the Atlantic Ocean. The final destination of the convoy remains unknown, but their route suggests a possible West African port.
This naval movement follows a pattern of increased Russian logistical and naval activity in the Mediterranean and along Africa’s Atlantic coast. Escort missions such as this may signal broader geopolitical or military logistics interests, possibly tied to Russia’s known infrastructure investments and diplomatic ties in countries like Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, and others in the Gulf of Guinea region.
The departure of Boikiy further reduces the Russian Navy’s presence in the Mediterranean, which is now limited to just one frigate and one intelligence-gathering ship
