This morning, a Royal Air Force Boeing P-8A Poseidon MRA1 (registration ZP803) took off from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, around 08:00 CEST and began a long-range mission towards the Red Sea. The aircraft’s flight path took it southbound over Israel and the Gulf of Aqaba before entering the Red Sea airspace, where it is expected to operate in support of the UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG) led by HMS Prince of Wales.
The CSG is currently deployed in the Red Sea as part of its wider operational deployment en route to the Indian Ocean. The presence of the Poseidon in the area underscores the UK’s commitment to providing robust maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities to ensure the safety and operational effectiveness of the task force.
The P-8A Poseidon, a maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, is equipped with advanced sensors and surveillance systems capable of detecting surface and underwater threats over vast areas. Its deployment in the Red Sea highlights the strategic importance of the region and the Royal Navy’s forward presence in a critical maritime corridor.
The HMS Prince of Wales CSG includes destroyers, frigates, and support vessels, and is scheduled to participate in joint exercises and security operations across the Indian Ocean region in the coming months. The Poseidon’s support will enhance the group’s situational awareness and response capabilities as it continues its transit.
