New entry in the Romanian theatre

This morning we’ve tracked the usual surveillance activity of NATO assets over Romania:

  • NATO Boeing E-3A (reg. LX-N90448, callsign MAGIC11) departed from Konya AB, central Turkey
  • US Army Bombardier 600 ARTEMIS (reg. N488CR – callsign BRIO68) departed from Costanta, Romania

In addition to these, there is also a new entry. A French Air Force C-160 Gabriel (reg. F216) signals intelligence (SIGINT) carried out a surveillance mission. Two C-160s were modified and fitted with mission equipment from Thales before entering service at the end of the 1980s.

In the past we have seen it in action over the eastern Mediterranean or off Libya but this is the first time we have tracked it in this area
