Tenth report on the naval situation in the Mediterranean Sea

New (10th) report on the naval situation in the Mediterranean sea.

Warning. This post shows the positions of the main naval groups or other individual units deemed relevant. This post is not exhaustive of all units present at sea at this time.


NATO naval forces

NATO currently has 3 aircraft carriers available in the central/eastern Mediterranean:

1) The USNavy aircraft carrier USS Truman (CVN-75) and her Combat Strike Group left Palma a few days ago and is now sailing in the southern Adriatic Sea

2) Italian aircraft carriers Cavour (C550) and Garibaldi (C551) are both in Taranto naval base

3) The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 is underway in the eastern Mediterranean where it carried out an exercise with the Hellenic Air Force in recent days

4) The Standing NATO Mine Counter Measures Group Two (SNMCMG2) has arrived yesterday in Souda, Crete.

5) ITS Grecale (F 571)  and HS Themistokles (F465) are participating in IRINI operation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea 

EU🇪🇺 Operation #IRINI found a cargo in breach of the UN🇺🇳 #ArmsEmbargo on #Libya🇱🇾 during the inspection of MV VICTORY RORO. Dozens of vehicles modified for military use were discovered and seized. The 🚢 has been diverted to a European port.

6) ITS Sciré (S 527) is supporting Operation Sea Guardian in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean

RUSSIA naval forces

Russian units continue, for the most part, to be stationed in the eastern Mediterranean. It should be noted that, for the first time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, two smaller units left the Mediterranean after a stop in Algiers.

1) After a stop in Algiers Electronic Intelligence gathering ship “KILDIN” (Project 861M / Moma Class) and the Replenishment Vessel “Vice-admiral PAROMOV (project 03182 ) have left the Mediterranean sea

2) The Bujan class corvette Sviyazhsk is reported west of Crete

3) The Admiral Flota Kasatonov frigate is underway in the south eastern Aegean sea

4) The Slava-class Varyag cruiser and the Admiral Tributs destroyer are partecipating in an exercise south of Crete

5) The rest of the units are in port in or around Tartus
