Italian CAEW on task

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) approved a possible foreign military sale to the Italian government of two Gulfstream G550 CAEW on December 15, 2020.

In 2012, Italian Air Force had already acquired two G550 CAEWs and ordered two new AISREW (Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Electronic Warfare) and six “green” airframes that can be converted to JAMMS or CAEW configurations.

Where to see how the tankers of the Italian Air Force are used. We also researched the utilisation of the 2 CAEWs currently in force.

In the last month, only MM62293 has been operational while MM62303 flew to the USA at Appleton on 16 December and is still there (maintenance/upgrade?).

The only available trim has therefore almost always been used for SIGINT missions over Romania or, in two cases, for missions over Poland.

Note that we also tracked a CAEW mission over the western Mediterranean.
