New submarines for Romania

The Defense Committees of the Romanian Senate and Chamber of Deputies have unanimously approved the initiation of negotiations by the Ministry of Defense for the purchase of two Scorpene submarines.

Developed jointly by the French naval group and the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, the Scorpene submarines can dive up to 300 meters in the sea. They can carry 18 torpedoes and missiles or 30 mines. Equipped with six 21-inch diameter torpedo tubes located at the bow, the submarines are designed for versatility. Romania is expected to pay 2 billion euros for the acquisition of two submarines.

The acquisition of submarines by Romania would significantly increase the number of NATO submarines in the Black Sea, enhancing the alliance’s capabilities in gathering information on Russia’s operations in the region. This move demonstrates Romania’s commitment to strengthening its defense and contributing to NATO’s collective efforts to maintain stability and security in the Black Sea region.
