An Italian Air Force ATR P-72A (registration MM62281) has just returned to Sigonella Air Base after an extensive long-range mission to Southeast Asia, where it took part in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025, one of the most important defense and aerospace events in the Asia-Pacific region.
The aircraft departed from Sigonella on May 14, making several stopovers along the way — including Al Dhafra (UAE), Mumbai, and Chennai (India). It remained in Langkawi, Malaysia, where LIMA 2025 took place, from May 17 to 25.
The return flight followed the same route, and the aircraft landed back in Sigonella today, completing a two-week round-trip mission.
This marks a rare and notable deployment for the ATR P-72A, a platform primarily used for maritime patrol and surveillance tasks. Its participation in LIMA 2025 highlights Italy’s commitment to strengthening defense ties and promoting its aerospace industry in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Italian presence at LIMA also serves a diplomatic and industrial purpose, showcasing national capabilities in maritime security and fostering bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries in the region.
Itamilradar will continue to monitor further developments regarding Italy’s growing involvement in Asia-Pacific defense forums.
