On Thursday, June 12, the Galatina Air Base (Lecce), home to the 61st Wing and the 10th Aircraft Maintenance Unit, will host the official handover ceremony from the T-339A to the new T-345A trainer aircraft of the Italian Air Force.
The event marks a symbolic milestone: the T-339A entered service in 1981 precisely at Galatina, and after nearly 45 years and over 340,000 flight hours, it will be retired from its training role. Known affectionately as the “Macchino,” the MB-339A played a key role in the formation of thousands of Italian and foreign pilots.

Starting in July 2025, the T-345A by Leonardo will take over, enhancing Italy’s military flight training capabilities and reaffirming the 61st Wing’s role as a global center of excellence in this field.
The T-345A, developed by Leonardo, is a next-generation trainer designed to deliver high-efficiency performance and advanced avionics for Phase II and III of military pilot training. Combining low operating costs with jet-like handling, it represents a major step forward in Italy’s pilot training modernization program.

The ceremony will include aerial and static displays, a photographic gallery, and exhibitions, and will be attended by senior Air Force officials. It will also bring together generations of pilots, technicians, and maintainers who have served on the T-339A throughout its long career.
The new T-345A will be used initially by the 214th Squadron during Phase II of training, and later by the 213th Squadron in Phase III.
Note: As seen in the image above, the T-345s have already been flying for some time. After some initial technical issues typical of a new platform, they are now operating regularly and can be consistently tracked.
