Where are operating NATO aircraft carrier CSG?

The Combat Strike Groups of two NATO aircraft carriers, the French Charles de Gaulle and the American Truman, are currently active in the Mediterranean.

Over the past few days, we have been trying to figure out where they are and today we can indicate with good approximation.

The USNavy carrier USS Truman (CVN-75) has been operating in recent weeks first in the Ionian Sea and then in the Adriatic. its F-18Es are actively participating in operations related to the war in Ukraine by carrying out CAP missions over Romania.

On 3 March, we spotted a satellite image showing it sailing between Crete and Santorini, so it was clear that it was moving towards the Aegean Sea.

Yesterday we had confirmation of this following the publication of a photo showing it off the Greek island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean.

Truman, flagship of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (CSG), along with the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56); Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), USS Cole (DDG 67), USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), USS Mitscher (DDG 57); Norwegian Royal Navy Fridjof Nansen-class frigate HNoMS Fridjtof Nansen (F310); and Italian Navy Bergamini-class guided-missile frigate ITS Carabiniere (F 593) supported NATO enhanced Air Policing missions, bolstering the defense of the NATO Alliance.

The CSG of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle (R-91) has been included in the NATO system and left Cyprus on 2 March after a technical stop.

On 5 March, the first mission of its Rafale and E-2C aircraft took place over Romania.

At the same time, it was reported that the ship was moving into the central Mediterranean to approach the Ukrainian theatre of operations.
Last night we had the opportunity to find out where exactly it is now: in the Ionian Sea.

In fact, a Belgian NH-90, which is currently on the frigate Forbin accompanying the aircraft carrier Chearles de Gaulle, was tracked west of the Greek island of Lefkada. We can therefore say that the French CSG is currently sailing in the area.

The third NATO CSG in the Mediterranean, that of the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour, is currently in port, in Taranto.
