Air defense training in the Mediterranean Sea for Admiral Gorshkov

The Russian Ministry of Defense issued this statement regarding the activity of the frigate “Admiral Gorshkov” in the Mediterranean. As with all statements from the Russian Ministry of Defense, it should be taken with caution, bearing in mind that since its arrival in the Mediterranean, the vessel has consistently engaged in limited activity without undertaking particularly lengthy missions.

“The crew of the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov,” belonging to the Northern Fleet, recently conducted an intensive training session focused on countering simulated air attacks from a fictitious enemy during their long-range voyage in the Mediterranean Sea. This training achievement was reported by the Northern Fleet’s press service on Monday.

While the frigate was carrying out its mission of a long-range cruise in the Mediterranean, the crew of the “Admiral Gorshkov” took the opportunity to engage in a comprehensive exercise involving computer simulations to simulate a hostile air attack scenario.

The training exercise encompassed the active participation of various units, including navigation, missile-artillery, and radio warfare teams. Their collective goal was to assess and enhance the effectiveness of their defense systems, particularly the Poliment-Redut anti-aircraft missile system, the A-192 artillery support, and the combat information center.

The exercise focused on evaluating the speed, accuracy, and overall synchronization of the combat crews’ actions. They meticulously examined target designation issuance and analyzed the response mechanisms in escorting and neutralizing potential threats using a range of medium and short-range weapons.

To add realism to the exercise, the crew of the frigate employed their onboard Ka-27 helicopters to simulate long-range air attack means, testing the ship’s readiness in handling such scenarios.

The results were remarkable, with the crew successfully completing all aspects of the exercise. Their cohesive efforts demonstrated exceptional coordination and efficiency in dealing with the simulated threats.

The journey of the “Admiral Gorshkov” began on January 4, departing from the Northern Fleet’s main base in Severomorsk. Throughout the course of the long-range voyage, the frigate’s crew actively participated in two international naval exercises conducted in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.

In addition to their involvement in multinational exercises, the crew seized the opportunity to foster international relations by making port calls in the Republic of South Africa, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
