A recent satellite image (via Google Earth) taken on March 16, 2025, provides a rare and comprehensive view of Italy’s naval strength gathered at the Mar Grande Naval Base in Taranto. Several of the Marina Militare’s most advanced and strategically important warships are visible, showcasing the operational readiness and capacity of the Italian Navy.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the vessels docked at the base, listed as seen from top to bottom and left to right in the image:

1. Trieste (L9890)

The Trieste is a landing helicopter dock (LHD) and the newest flagship of the Italian Navy. With the capability to operate both helicopters and F-35B fighter jets, this multipurpose amphibious assault ship enhances Italy’s power projection and rapid response capabilities.

2. Garibaldi (C551)

The Garibaldi is a light aircraft carrier and former flagship of the Navy. She has currently completed its operational cycle and has been placed in reserve

3. Vulcano (A5335)

The Vulcano is a replenishment oiler (Logistic Support Ship) capable of supplying fuel, ammunition, and supplies to naval task forces. It plays a critical logistical role in supporting sustained operations at sea.

4. Carabiniere (F593)

This FREMM-class frigate specializes in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and features advanced sonar and stealth capabilities. It is one of the most modern units in the fleet.

5. Alpino (F594)

Another FREMM-class frigate, the Alpino is also optimized for ASW missions and serves as a frontline escort in multi-threat environments.

6. Etna (A5326)

The Etna is a support ship used for replenishment at sea. Though older than the Vulcano, it remains active in supplying fuel and stores during long missions.

7. San Giorgio (L9892)

Part of the San Giorgio-class of amphibious transport docks, this vessel is designed for transporting troops, vehicles, and equipment for amphibious landings and humanitarian missions.

8. Morosini (P431)

The Morosini is the second unit of the Paolo Thaon di Revel-class offshore patrol vessels (Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura). It combines surveillance, patrol, and combat functions with modular mission configurations.

9. Durand de la Penne (D560)

This guided missile destroyer is part of the Durand de la Penne-class. Though aging, it remains capable in anti-aircraft and surface warfare roles.

10. Cavour (C550)

The Cavour is Italy’s current aircraft carrier and naval flagship. Fully capable of operating F-35B jets, it represents the core of Italian naval aviation and amphibious capabilities.

11. Mimbelli (D561)

Sister ship to the Durand de la Penne, the Mimbelli is similarly equipped for air defense and fleet escort duties. It maintains operational relevance despite its years of service.

12. Andrea Doria (D553)

A Horizon-class destroyer specialized in anti-air warfare (AAW), the Andrea Doria is equipped with the PAAMS system and Aster missiles, playing a crucial role in protecting task groups from aerial threats.

This rare snapshot not only demonstrates the logistical importance of the Taranto base but also reflects the Italian Navy’s state of readiness and strategic posture in the central Mediterranean. The presence of such a significant number of high-value vessels underscores the base’s key role in national and NATO maritime operations.
