This morning, a French Navy Breguet Atlantic ATL2 (registration “9”) conducted a surveillance mission over the central Mediterranean, south of Sardinia.
The aircraft, with callsign FNY56KS, took off from NAS Lann-Bihoué (Lorient), in Brittany, and headed directly to the central Tyrrhenian Sea, where it operated between 07:00 and 09:00 CEST.
Although the precise nature of the mission remains undisclosed, the ATL2 is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft primarily used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). Its presence in this strategic area could be related to the growing military activity observed in the region in recent months, particularly involving NATO and allied forces.
Following the mission, the aircraft began its return route toward the French mainland.
The French Navy’s ATL2 aircraft are frequently deployed across the Mediterranean and beyond, showcasing France’s commitment to maritime security and NATO operations.
