Earlier today, a Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton drone belonging to the US Navy (registration 169660) carried out a wide-ranging surveillance mission over the central and eastern Mediterranean, as shown by the recorded flight path.
The aircraft took off from NAS Sigonella (Sicily) around 02:00 CEST and initially headed southwest, performing several orbits off the coast of Libya near Tripoli, before shifting eastward to operate over the Gulf of Sirte and off the coast of Cyrenaica. It then proceeded across the central Mediterranean, continuing its mission in the Levant area.
In the second phase of the mission, the MQ-4C conducted intense operations in international airspace off the coasts of Lebanon and Syria, flying repeated passes and surveillance maneuvers. This area has been under close observation for weeks due to rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah militias, as well as ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip.
This mission once again highlights the strategic importance of the MQ-4C Triton for large-scale Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The Triton, a naval variant of the Global Hawk, is designed to cover vast oceanic areas thanks to its long endurance and advanced avionics, integrating seamlessly with US and allied naval and air units.
The flight path and the breadth of the area covered clearly demonstrate the drone’s crucial role in monitoring naval and military activities in sensitive regions such as Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the waters near the Middle East.
