Earlier today, an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning), (registration MM62293), is carrying out a surveillance mission over the western Black Sea region.
The aircraft, operating with callsign IAM1495, departed from Pratica di Mare Air Base in central Italy and flew eastward, entering Bulgarian airspace before heading toward the Romanian coast. Once over the western Black Sea, off the shores of Constanța and north of Varna, it performed a series of racetrack patterns typical of airborne early warning operations.
This area has seen increasing NATO surveillance activity since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, with AWACS and ISR platforms regularly monitoring movements in and around Russian-occupied Crimea. The E.550 CAEW, based on the Gulfstream G550 platform, is equipped with advanced radar and electronic intelligence systems, making it a key asset for strategic situational awareness.
