Movements in Souda

Traffic in and out of the Souda naval base on the island of Crete this morning.

USNavy expeditionary mobile base (ESB) USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB-4) has left the base. The ship is operated by the Navy’s Military Sealift Command with predominantly civilian crews, while the ESBs, owing to the nature of their operations, have been commissioned and commanded directly by the U.S. Navy.

In the same minutes the landing ship dock of the Royal Fleet Auxiliar RFA Lyme Bay (L3007) has arrived in Souda. RFA Lyme Bay is a Bay-class landing ship dock of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. She is capable of delivering a significant fighting force anywhere in the world.

847 NAS Wild Cat and 845 NAS Merlin Mark3 deck trials on board RFA Lyme Bay, off the Cornwall coast.
