Surveillance mission of Libya

New surveillance mission off the coast of Libya for an USNavy Northrop Grumman MQ-4C (reg. 169804). The American drone, which took off from NAS Sigonella, operated throughout the night off the Libyan coast, from Tripoli to Tobruk.

It is interesting to note that during the mission, the drone changed its callsign. The mission began with the usual callsign “BLACKCAT” and then switched to “OVERLORD” around 05:00 CET, a callsign typically used for missions over the Persian Gulf (where the drone had indeed operated its previous mission).

The flight path is not complete, but thanks to isolated tracking data, it can be reconstructed with reasonable accuracy.

As has happened several times in recent weeks, the US Triton patrolled the entire Libyan coastline, including the Gulf of Sirte, while remaining entirely within international airspace.
