A  RAF Boeing RC-135W (reg. ZZ664), departed from RAf Waddington, carried out this afternoon a surveillance mission over the Black Sea.

After what happened on September (an RAF RC-135 was intercepted by Russian fighters who fired a missile by mistake) two RAF Eurofigther FGR.4s (reg. ZK362/ZK426– callsign DREAD011/012)  escorted the aircraft over the Black Sea.

The two Typhoons departed from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, are oprating with the support of a RAF tanker, an Airbus KC.2 (reg. ZZ338), which also took off from Cyprus.

The air surveillance is provided by an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW (reg. MM62303) orbiting over eastern Romania.

We tracked such a mission just 2 days ago, we had never recorded this kind of mission so close together.

Monitoring military aircraft and ships movements over Italy and Mediterranean Sea

  • I see the coverage is mainly in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. You may know this already but I have seen, on rare occasion, US aircraft showing on flightradar24 that flight up the west coast of Norway and then over the top to somewhere off the northern coast of Russia. This happened either yesterday or the day before with a flight called Constant Phoenix, which sniffs for atmospheric radiation. I assume this is a typical training mission.

    Boeing WC-135 Constant Phoenix.

The plane wasn’t tracked above northern Russia but was when it came back near the Nordic state area.

    Best wishes.
