What we know about the Turkish frigates off Tripoli

In the last days, two photos have appeared on the web showing two frigates ( TCG Göksu and TCG Gökova ) of the Turkish navy off Tripoli. It must be said that we don’t know where and when really these photos were taken.

Turkey’s defence ministry said these ships recovered in the central Mediterranean Sea some migrants who were then handed over to the Libyan authorities. The two frigates, according to Ankara, were operating under NATO command in the Sea Guardian operation.

However, NATO denied that the two ships were part of the Sea Guardian operation at that time.

Some unconfirmed rumours indicate that the two ships escorted a ship from Turkey with weapons in favour of the GNA but there is no evidence of it (in this photos the warships presence is probably just a coincidence).

As far as we know, the two units are underway from some weeks in the central Mediterranean and their appearance in front of Tripoli could be only a propaganda operation without any real military purpose.

We wait to understand if, in the next few hours, the situation will clear up.
